The College of Public Health Department of Information Technology is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator to be responsible for the design, configuration, administration, security, operational integrity, support, and integration of diverse systems in an enterprise environment, including both cloud computing and on-premises resources. This position performs complex administrative tasks and collaborates effectively with other IT staff across the University of Iowa in support of the College of Public Health. Analysis and Design: Evaluate technology and tools and recommends buying decisions for departments, centers, research projects, and outreach programs in the College of Public Health. Maintain security by implementing principle of least privilege (PoLP) in access granted to users and systems. Support MECM and Puppet Enterprise environments for the College of Public Health. Provide on call support for critical issues and complex problems. Monitor uptime of critical services and configure alerts for issues which may impact operations. Support enterprise VMware cluster environment. Relationship Management (Vendor/Customer). Interface directly with hardware and software vendors at the University and collegiate levels. Create a Release document with all the list of user stories and get the QA approval next to the user stories. Create a SR (service request) and CR (change request) in Ivanti based on the user stories and include Product Owner and IT approvals. If the release has multiple teams, user stories create a task for each team. Once the release is approved, communicate details of the release accordingly. Move all release components from the Develop branch to the Prod release, followed by the main release. Validate the deployment following approval to ensure it is ready for the evening's release. Develop, deploy, and manage scalable and secure data pipelines according to Zero Trust principles Development & Engineering Implement automation using Powershell , YAML, JSON, Bash, or other tools to streamline operational processes. Develop, implement, and improve upon Python based scripts to support day to day infrastructure and continuous monitoring applications Identity Governance Perform user account onboarding/offboarding and managing proper role-based access controls in both Active Directory and in the cloud. Continuous Monitoring Ensure collective awareness and accurate and timely response to performance related issues through the development, implementation, and use of performance monitoring dashboards and alerts. Ensure integrity of data streams, ingestion, and transformations of data into Azure Sentinel. Develop and implement automated playbooks to detected incidents. Perform regular analysis, tracking, and reporting on the system environment including: Capacity analysis and right-sizing of virtual machines Inventory checks Compliance to security standards and benchmarks Cloud environment costs, trends, and anomalies User account access reviews Incidents that impact system availability Collaborate with other teams to implement appropriate cloud solutions and maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of the cloud infrastructure including diagrams, configuration details, and operational procedures. Continually identify, leverage, and implement best practices for cloud environments and virtual machines. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar field and 4+ years experience in managing compute environments. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Proficiency in both Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server operating systems. Proficiency in managing IaaS/SaaS resources in a cloud environment. Demonstrated understanding of networking concepts such as DNS, VPN, DHCP, TLS, IP subnetting and routing Demonstrated ability to automate infrastructure tasks. Demonstrated ability to independently isolate and resolve problems. Self-starter that can work independently while possessing the communication skills to work effectively with software development teams and customers. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
