DepartmentBSD SRF - Office of Shared Research FacilitiesAbout the DepartmentThe Human Immunologic Monitoring (HIM) facility serves as a specialized laboratory performing correlative assays and clinical specimen biobanking for cancer-based clinical trials. We participate in project development to assist in assay selection and optimization prior to study initiation. We offer a pick-up service for specimens from patients at the U of C Hospital or outpatient clinics, and process the samples as indicated for the assays being performed. For some studies, isolation and freezing of serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells for analysis at a later date is performed, while for others immediate staining of whole blood for specific cell surface markers of interest is carried out. In addition, our laboratory prepares clinical grade products, such as peptide vaccines, for administration into patients.Assays performed include a wide variety of immunology-based assays such as ELISA, ELISPOT, tetramer binding assays, detection of cell surface markers by flow cytometry, and biochemical assays such as Western Blots. We also perform molecular biology assays such as RNA extraction from tumor biopsies and either real time RT-PCR for specific transcripts or preparation of samples for bulk or single cell RNAseq. Tumor biopsies are analyzed by spatial transcriptomics and multi-spectral immune fluorescence. Stool samples are prepared for microbiome sequencing and metabolomic analysis. Our facility is equipped with 10X Genomics Chromium iX controller, 10X Genomics CytAssist, EVOS M7000 Imaging System, Vectra Polaris automated quantitative pathology imaging station, Nanostring nCounter analysis system, Isoplexis Isolight system, ELISPOT reader, PCR thermocyclers, CO2 incubators, biosafety cabinets, anaerobic chamber, centrifuges, and equipment for Western blot analysis. Although we perform assays on human samples, consideration will be given to expanding these services to mouse-model systems. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. The individual will oversee daily operations of the open-access facility and serve as a subject matter expert in support of the department's dynamic research portfolio. The Lab Director is responsible for strategic planning as well as ensuring routine instrument operations including training, maintenance, and repairs. The Director is responsible for maintaining productive interactions with instrument vendors and managing associated service agreements. The Lab Director will establish policies and procedures that ensure a well-trained user base and uninterrupted laboratory operations. Strong technical skills, excellent organizational skills, and familiarity with health and safety requirements, are essential.ResponsibilitiesManages staff, users, and equipment to ensure efficient and safe operation of the mass spectrometry laboratories.Provides expertise to researchers and research support staff. The lab, funded continuously and predominantly by NIH and other agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for nearly 20 years, employs about 20 full and part-time researchers and staff across disciplines including epidemiology, gerontology, anthropology, biology, social work, public health, and data science. The lab routinely collaborates across disciplines, departments, and with investigators at other institutions including experts in the fields of health services research, implementation research, computer science, geriatrics, oncology, public health, social services administration, psychology, neuroscience, materials science, engineering and other medical and social science fields. The work of the lab focuses in two main areas: 1) social health and social care, with a particular concern for women, children and older adults living in socioeconomically marginalized communities, and 2) sexual health and sexual health care, including preservation and treatment of female sexual function in the context of aging, cancer and other common diseases. Description The University of Chicago's Department of Medicine, Section of Cardiology, is searching for a full-time Associate Professor or Professor to serve as the Director of our Cardiac Arrhythmia Center (Electrophysiology). The appointee will join and lead an established group of nationally known physicians, researchers, and educators in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology. In conjunction with other leaders in Cardiology and the Heart and Vascular Center, the Director is expected to expand translational and clinical research and to develop strategies for increasing patient referrals and procedure volumes. The Cardiac Electrophysiology Program at the University of Chicago has a long tradition of excellence. A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cardiac arrhythmias are provided as well as two new state-of-the-art, dedicated clinical electrophysiology laboratories. The program is currently ACGME-accredited to train four (4) clinical cardiac electrophysiology fellows each year. Clinical responsibilities include performing cardiac electrophysiology procedures and doing outpatient cardiology clinic, inpatient service, and consultation. The University's stewardship of Argonne and Fermilab provides institutional support and unique resources that help these National Laboratories tackle some of the greatest scientific and technical challenges of our time.Job SummaryReporting to the Assistant Vice President for Finance and Chief of Staff for National Laboratories, the Director, Financial Compliance will oversee the National Laboratories' financial and operational compliance of submitted budgets, internal audit and external responsibilities and accounting for the unit; with direct responsibility for the National Laboratories' Board of Governors financial compliance of close-out reports (budget proposal, year-end submissions and operations), Department of Energy (DOE) and Inspector General (IG) Audit reviews and risk mitigation process improvements. The Director will work closely with senior management to deliver high-quality information and perspective regarding financial performance compliance, process improvements, year-end actual vs budget variance analysis for annual and quarterly submissions to the DOE. In addition, this role is key for the improvement of compliance, risk mitigation, and enhanced internal financial controls in alignment to US GAAP, DOE, Inspector General audits and other governmental agencies policies and procedures. She / he will work closely with staff from the Board of Governors Relations, National Laboratories (Argonne and Fermilab) Finance teams, DOE Contracting Officers, Budget Office, Financial Services, University Research Administration, and other Finance teams within the extended portfolio The Director supervises one financial analyst.ResponsibilitiesLeads the development and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial planning cycles including budget, forecast, and year-end reports and submissions in compliance with governmental, and US GAAPs pronouncements.Timely and accurately prepares relevant monthly financial statements, activity reports, financial position forecasts, and other reports as required by regulatory agencies (DOE, IG, and UoC).Prepares value-add financial analysis, communicates financial results, operational overview, and strategic recommendations to senior management in a concise, clear, and timely manner.Oversees all financial aspects of internal and external National Laboratories and Board of Governors engagements, Graduate Research Cooperative (GRC), Joint Task Force Initiatives, and other projects by closely partnering with internal teams, senior management, and other stakeholders at the University, the National Laboratories, DOE, etc.Implements, improves, and oversees unit-wide operational efficiency, strengthens internal controls, and enhances the utilization of ERP systems.Ensures timely compliance of federal, state, and local governmental and requirements, specifically the Office of Science, DOE and IG.Oversees unit-wide compliance and adherence to procurement policies, fund and grant management, program execution and overall revenue generation stewardship.Provides financial and operational consulting services to the senior leadership team on key strategic initiatives to help the units stay focused on achieving their strategic goals.Develops strong partnerships with a broad range of key internal stakeholders including the Budget Office, Financial Services, DOE contracting offices, National Laboratories Finance and Procurement teams, Office of Legal Counsel, and a variety of external stakeholders.Develops and leads the implementation of change management initiatives, such as shared services outsourcing, and University-wide projects.Advises budgets for all areas within scope of responsibility.
