The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh (Oakland campus) invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor position, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024. This position is on a 12-month basis, is outside of the tenure stream, and will require administrative and budgetary approval. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Minimum qualifications: Applicants should have earned a minimum of a doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited university and have at least 5 years of university-level teaching experience. Preferred qualifications: Experience with teaching large-enrollment university-level organic chemistry courses, and with developing and managing large-enrollment lab programs. Job description: The candidate will serve as the Director of Organic Chemistry Laboratory program in the Chemistry Department. In addition, the candidate will teach two organic chemistry laboratory sections (or equivalent) in the fall and spring terms. The Organic Chem program delivers laboratory instruction to over 800 unique students annually, encompassing fall, spring, and summer (both 6Week1 and 6Week2) terms as well as our Nursing Chemistry course, CHEM 0190. Some duties of the Director of the Organic Chemistry Laboratory program include the preparation of the teaching assignments for the organic lab lectures, labs and tutoring and associated scheduling issues; leading the weekly TA/TF meetings throughout all three terms; assisting in our new graduate student TA orientation/training; managing planned and last-minute instructor absences; incorporating new labs over the summer and innovating instructional practices (e.g., automation of grading for enhanced learning); and assisting in working with the huge email burden required of our laboratory coordinators.
