Visiting Assistant Professor in Critical Approaches to Automated Technologies and Labor Pending budgetary approval, the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Critical Approaches to Automated Technologies and Labor. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated potential for qualitative research in the social context of automated technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics as it pertains to labor, innovation, and design. Areas of study within this topic might include ways in which human labor and innovation are occluded in media narratives about artificial intelligence, gendered dynamics of labor and innovation, resistant practices in design, human labor in AI integration, and concepts of “essential” work and workers. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching in the broader area of technology studies, such as critical computing, innovation, workplace technologies, and qualitative methods from a social science perspective. In keeping with its importance in our undergraduate curriculum, experience teaching Public Speaking is strongly preferred. Appointees will teach current undergraduate and graduate courses, develop new courses in the area of their research specialization, and otherwise participate in the department’s intellectually vigorous graduate and undergraduate programs. Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. and experience commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh as well as a research program consistent with a research-focused AAUP institution.
