The role of Engineering Design Manager - Renewables serves as the link between the Director, project managers and design engineers. This role requires a deep understanding of AutoCAD Civil 3D and entails delivering a high-level overview of engineering workflows, best practices in management, and rigorous quality control, including model review, troubleshooting, and oversight of electronic deliverables. This position embodies a commitment to engineering excellence, training, mentorship, and operational efficiencies, playing a vital leadership role. Key responsibilities encompass quality management audits, collaborative workflow documentation with Design Application Specialists, and the development of project-specific operational efficiencies for staffing within workgroups.What You Will Do: Be the Engineer of Record and Assist with Engineering Team Management:Play the role as Engineer of Record for Renewable projects or essential clients.Conduct design reviews to identify and address potential design flaws, ensuring project efficiency and reliability.Provide prioritization of work assignments of design engineers, in concert with Project Managers within the group, and collaborate work assignments of Technical staff with Design Application Specialists. Coordinate with Renewables Workload Management Team on key staffing assignments for projects, project forecasting, and staffing needs.Develop and lead an efficient, self-reliant team dedicated to enhancing WSB’s project delivery and ensuring client satisfaction with Director. Deliver Engineering Excellence – Collaborate with workgroup Design Application Specialists on:Onboarding and development programs for Renewables engineers and technicians, including any regional-specific requirements.Ongoing evaluation, documentation, and tracking of engineering skill set proficiencies within the workgroup.Providing guidance and support for troubleshooting and resolving complex engineering challenges.Ensure Quality Management – Implement Quality Management Plan, involving:Workflow development and documentation in collaboration with Design Application Specialists.Establish and maintain quality assurance processes and standards throughout the design phase, identifying areas for improvement and driving best practices. Collaborate with engineering teams to provide technical guidance and feedback on design-related issues and quality assurance.Thoughtful assignment of highly skilled teams to projects in conjunction with Directors, both within Renewables and also Directors of service areas that support Renewables projects.Effective communication of expectations of engineering team.Rigorous oversight to ensure quality reviews are conducted, with periodic audits.Annual reporting of audits results to the Director of Renewables.Collaborate with other workgroups to ensure adherence to design and quality standards.Cultivate Growth for Others and Self:Foster a mentorship and training-focused team, with purpose of cultivating Engineers of Record. Collaborate with Project Managers and the Director of Renewables to create and maintain efficient proposal templates.Attend external Renewables-related conferences and meetings to support the expansion of the Renewables workgroup.Coordinate with Director of Renewables on staff hires/interviews.Collaboration Across Firm – Participate in collaboration with other Design Managers to ensure:Uniformity in the application of engineering methodologies and the alignment of shared objectives and resources.The progression of roles and responsibilities for Engineers of Record, with a particular focus on reinforcing the concept of "Responsible Charge."Proactive identification of areas for ongoing enhancement and optimization.What you will bring:Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or equivalent.PE license in at least one state and ability to obtain licensure in other states.Proficiency with Civil 3D.2+ years of experience as an engineering lead, preferably in utility-scale solar/wind energy sectors.2+ years of experience as Engineer of Record is preferred .Expertise in mass grading design, earthwork calculations, road design, erosion and sediment control applications, and drainage studies is required.Ability to perform detailed engineering design or major portions of engineering effort on multiple large-scale projects and for complex topographic sites is required.We are seeking a detail-oriented individual with a strong commitment to technical excellence.Must be a self-starter and able to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.Who We Are: WSB is a design and consulting firm specializing in GIS, engineering, planning, environmental, and construction services.
