Job Description Summary:The Principal Engineer, BESS Controls will provide strategic leadership to the SOLV Operational Technology Solutions Team supporting the design, development and productization of the SOLV OTS SCADA Platform on PV + BESS and Standalone BESS projects.Job Description:*This job description reflects management's assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assignedPosition Responsibilities and Duties:Lead the design and development of control and monitoring system platforms for utility scale BESS resources, including both stand-alone BESS and co-located BESS & PV projects.Work with partners in Business Development, R&D, and the SCADA Engineering team to define and prioritize the development of control features that are needed for future projects.Provide leadership and mentorship to the SCADA Engineering team in all aspects of battery energy storage systems and their associated control systems. May include design review, troubleshooting, and peer review of BESS control systems.Work within a team environment to define and implement product design standards and best practices that align with division goals and objectives.Experience with developing control logic and documentation for utility-scale energy management systems including PV and BESS resources.Experience with developing master plant level controls and documentation for multiple co-located PV and BESS resources.Represent BESS Controls and provide guidance to other engineering teams in development efforts and platform innovations. Efforts include but are not limited to: system architecture, power plant control, collection / aggregation / & historization of data, network architecture, logic diagrams, HMI mockups & assets, and commissioning test plans & completion checklists while utilizing company defined documentation and standards.Understanding of development process for user-defined models to be utilized in dynamic project modelling.Understanding of PSCAD, PSSE, and TSAT modeling to ensure our site acceptance testing includes validation of the user-defined model.Provide expert level technical support and guidance to the OTS Design Team for diverse SCADA equipment configurations.Assist with building and maintaining documentation of controls in a centralized knowledge base, and publish SCADA technical-support bulletins when needed.Present technical overview of OTS BESS control solutions to prospective clients.Identify and learn appropriate software and hardware used and supported by the organization.Collaborate with cross functional teams where necessary to support platform development and data integration.Promote and adhere to a culture of NERC compliance and governance with respect to programming and commissioning standards, documentation, reporting, knowledge transfer and training.Support the SOLV Operations and Control Center as necessary to assist them with fundamental knowledge and identify opportunities to improve operations interface for BESS controls.Promote continuous training and career development within the OTS division.Objectives or Goals to Measure Performance:Maintaining design, programming, documentation, and commissioning standardsMaintain resiliency and continuity within our system independent of key knowledge holdersAdherence to Company policies and proceduresSuccessful execution of project scope, schedule, and budgetUnderstanding of and adherence to safety and quality procedures and practicesCustomer/client satisfaction and retentionImproved personal professional growth and educationEmployee satisfaction and retentionAssist in staff development and trainingPositive project team attitudePromote a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharingEffective utilization of project management, scheduling, and task management toolsMinimum Skills or Experience Requirements:Minimum bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from a recognized accredited university.Minimum of 8+ years of SCADA or Electrical engineering experience (experience working within renewable energy including; industrial or utility scale PV solar, BESS or Wind desired).Proficient with programming languages including but not limited to; C, C++, Java, Python, Structured Text (IEC61131-3).Mastery working with industry recognized PLC equipment including but not limited to Schweitzer Engineering RTAC Platform, Allen Bradley Control / CompactLogix platform, GE / Emerson RX3i, or similar "named variable" PLC environments.Experience with Inductive Automation's Ignition software or a similar SCADA software platformExperience with setting up servers, relational databases, and SCADA applications.Strong knowledge of design, installation and commissioning of SCADA networks using; Fiber Optics, Serial RS-232 / RS-485, and Ethernet TCP/IP.Strong knowledge of industrial automation protocols including but not limited to; Modbus RTU/TCP, DNP3, OPC UA and DA.Proficiency in reading and developing diagrams and schematics including but not limited to, power system, networking and control, electrical, mechanical and civil layouts.In-depth understanding of power plant operating procedures and control system interaction with governing bodies such as: Regional Compliance Entities, Independent System Operators, Transmission Operators, and Generator Operators.Ability to work with sub-contractors and field personnel.Proficiency with various project management, scheduling, and task management tools.Excellent Communication Skills.SOLV Energy Is an Equal Opportunity EmployerAt SOLV Energy we celebrate the power of our differences.
