Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation, the MagLab is a user facility that operates the world's most powerful superconducting and resistive electromagnets. These ultrahigh-field magnets are used as powerful tools for fundamental research in physics, chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science.The primary responsibilities of this position include: Characterization of mechanical properties of materials for magnet projects. These materials include superconductor wires and tapes, as well as high strength copper alloys, high strength steels, superalloys, and insulation specimens. The characterization usually involves measurements of tensile/compression properties, fracture toughness and fatigue properties both at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Management of the test facilities which consists of several tensile testing machines as well as other test systems. Development of new test capabilities and test procedures, and other research on mechanical properties of materials. The candidate will play a strong contributing role in the development of next generation of ultrahigh-field magnets where good communication is the key. Writing of engineering memos and reports is a requirement.
