Description:Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) and Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) located in San Antonio, Texas are seeking an Assistant or Associate Veterinarian to be responsible for ensuring appropriate veterinary care for the production, research and retirement colonies of nonhuman primates (NHP's). This candidate will also ensure regulatory compliance consistent with Standard Operating Procedures and in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The successful candidate will lead a team of veterinary technical staff to implement and execute research projects in ABSL2, 3 or 4 settings. The candidate will oversee research procedures, review protocols, advise Principal Investigators on proper use of animal models, develop research techniques, and improve animal care through refinement, welfare and management practices and collaborate with both internal and external PIs desiring to utilize the unique NHP resources resident here. The successful candidate will be appointed as a Core Scientist of the SNPRC, reporting to Associate Director for Veterinary Resources. Additionally, the successful candidate will also be a member of the Texas Biomed faculty, at an appropriate rank (Assistant or Associate Professor), reporting to the Vice President for Research. Since this is a faculty position, independent or collaborative research is highly encouraged. The successful candidate will also provide clinical care and preventative medicine support to the NHP colonies. This includes but is not limited to implementation of the preventative health program, disease surveillance and prevention, administering analgesics and anesthetics, participating in the DEA controlled substance program, surgical and post-surgical care of research animals, diagnosis and treatments of diseases.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Candidates must possess a D.V.M./V.M.D. degree from an AVMA accredited university, valid license to practice in the United States and USDA accreditation or be able to become USDA accredited.
