Laboratory Research Technican II The Cooper Lab (http://micropopbio.org/) is currently recruiting a research technician to assist in microbiology research on 1) the mechanisms of bacterial adaptation during infections and 2) implementing our EvolvingSTEM (https://evolvingstem.org/) science education program in classrooms in greater Pittsburgh. Our research focuses on pathways to biofilm production in Pseudomonas species as mechanisms of defense against phagocytic cells and antimicrobial compounds. Our science education program adapts this research to provide students in grades 6-16 authentic research experiences in their classroom. In essence, students observe “evolution-in-action” as bacterial populations adapt to form complex biofilm communities in their experiments. Fulfillment of this position will include tasks such as: microbiological assays, statistical analysis, reporting, and contribution to research reports. In addition, the education tasks will involve material preparation for classrooms, serving as a teaching assistant and student mentor, aiding facilitation of EvolvingSTEM teacher training, travel to and from local schools, and participation in outreach events/creating a positive image for program.
