Your impact: ThePioneerWoman.com is looking for seasoned food media expert (and ideally a lover of homemade cinnamon rolls, cast-iron pans, and big, juicy steaks) to oversee recipe operations and manage our Birmingham-based test kitchen and video team. This is an exciting opportunity to join our fast-growing Birmingham team and produce top-quality content for millions of readers and fans. The food director is a key member of the leadership team for the brand and will work directly with the digital director and editorial director to strategize recipe production, oversee the look and feel of all food content, and build on the early success of the ThePioneerWoman.com’s onsite video program.  Candidates should have a culinary degree and/or substantial professional kitchen experience, as well as experience producing and editing recipes and working in print and/or digital publishing. What you'll do: Oversee all recipe production  Strategize recipe development with the SEO and kitchen team Coordinate editorial calendar with deputy editor Review all developed recipes and coordinate cross-testing Work with developers to conceptualize new dishes and hone recipes Review storyboards for recipe videos; review propping for still and video shoots Communicate art direction to freelance food and prop stylists Approve all photography for still and video shoots; maintain photography style guide Top-edit recipe content  Build freelance teams of local prop and food stylists for still and video shoots Hire freelance recipe developers as needed to meet recipe production goals Oversee and direct any partnership content, working with marketing teams and external production crews to produce on-brand recipes and videos Manage a growing full-time staff, including video producer, recipe developers and editors; meet regularly with the team to set goals and discuss priorities Develop/maintain workflow for Birmingham team (production docs, schedules, etc) Oversee special projects and new food/recipe initiatives for the brand Take an active leadership role on the team and help maintain our editorial and culinary standards  Who you are: A true food enthusiast who would happily engage in a long conversation about salt grain sizes or the merits of an air fryer  An experienced cook who can read a recipe and know exactly how it will turn out, who can easily jump in to perform any task in the kitchen (recipe development, recipe editing, food styling, menu writing) and who would roll up their sleeves and wash dishes if necessary  A voracious consumer of food content who understands the food-media landscape A driven, curious strategist who’s willing to dive into data, pitch ideas, and launch new projects year-round An experienced leader who can effectively manage a staff with many different roles A college graduate with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, creative writing, communications or business, plus a culinary degree or professional kitchen and test-kitchen experience A food media expert with at least 8 years of experience in a related field The base salary for this role is between $102,000 and $114,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as: transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands.
