The SDSU Institute for Transformative Education supported by the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Teaching Assistants for our Six-Week Summer Hybrid Academy. The Institute’s goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week programs provide participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and teambuilding, social and emotional well-being, cultural and other enrichment activities within a hybrid setting. During the non-residential component of the academy, the Teaching Assistant will support the teachers in the classroom and students for their academic needs both virtually and in-person. During the residential component, the Teaching Assistant will support the Resident Advisors/Instructional Aides by supervising students in the dining hall and in what other ways necessary to meet the program objectives.ResponsibilitiesThe following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive. Take initiative and assist teachers and students in assigned online and in-person classes.Attend pre-program All-Staff training, Parent/Student Orientation and weekly staff meetings.Consult with teachers regarding students’ progress in class.Responsible to keep attendance of students in class.Assist teachers with completion and submission of daily attendance sheets, assignment sheets and grading.Assist students with in-class assignments individually or in small groups under the supervision of the teacher.Tutor and assist students during virtual and in-person study periods.Copy, collate, and staple materials for teachers as needed (during face-to-face instruction).Maintain communication with Program Director, Academic Coordinator, Administrative Support Coordinator, Head Resident Advisors and other program staff as needed.Participation in the program’s field experiences, recreational and cultural outings and virtual activities as needed.QualificationsKnowledge and AbilitiesMust be familiar using Zoom and creating break-out roomsMust be able to communicate effectively and clearly explain subject matter to adolescents.Must be sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically underserved, ethnically diverse high school students.Interact effectively with co-workers.Understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.Ability to relate well to others within the environment.Highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Well organized, ability to meet deadlines, detail oriented; possess good judgment and common sense.Demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity.Fingerprint clearance results are required prior to hire.DMV driving record printout may be required.Education & ExperienceSix months of experience performing support services for an instructional program (preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies or equipment);OR equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies or equipment or in a similar office environment;OR equivalent to two-years of college with 16-units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies or equipmentMust be in good academic standing at an academic, accredited institution or have completed a Bachelor’s degree.
