DescriptionPost-Doctoral Associate PositionTitle: Systems Metabolic Engineering of Non-Model Yeasts for Conversion of Complex Substrates into Biofuels, Biochemicals, and Biomaterials A postdoctoral researcher position is available in Dr. Trinh’s laboratory in The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The candidate will work on a project that aims to investigate robustness and metabolism of non-model yeasts (e.g., Yarrowia lipolytica) and engineer them as efficient and robust biocatalysts for biosynthesis of biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials from lignocellulosic biomass and plastics wastes. This project is a collaboration between Trinh lab at The University of Tennessee Knoxville and research scientists at The Oak Ridge National Laboratory and The US Department of Agriculture. QualificationsQualifications:An interested candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biochemistry, microbiology, or related fields with a proven track record of peer-reviewed publications. Candidates with strong skills and backgrounds in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, protein engineering, yeast physiology, yeast genetics, yeast metabolism, molecular cloning, CRISPR gene editing, fermentation, high-throughput screening, fermentation, and/or bioinformatics are highly preferred. The contract is on one-year basis and can be extended based on the research progress and funding availability. The Process Engineer provides first-line process technical support to the plant operations to ensure safe and efficient operation. The process engineer is responsible for identifying and implementing improvements to the process units, ensuring that changes are compliant with Koura procedures and governmental regulations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides process design support for production areas. Initiates suggestions for plant improvements with respect to process to improve safety, capacity and/or cost. Ability to perform standard chemical engineering calculations, e.g., fluid flow, pressure drop in piping. relief valve, rupture disc sizing, distillation calculations, reaction calculations, material and energy balance calculations, physical property calculations, heat exchanger sizing calculations. Proficient in using spreadsheet software. The position is responsible with providing a highly hazardous production area with technically sound advice and possessing ability to provide basic engineering designs. Must be able to communicate effectively to all departments and all levels. General knowledge of basic hardware and software and uses of a variety of different computer operating systems such as Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, Google Workspace, and web-based software Knowledge in Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) and Safeguarding 8-10 years of production experience EDUCATION REQUIRED B.S.
