He/She works with the Assistant Vice President for Research/Director of University Research Compliance to plan, develop, implement, modify, monitor, and maintain a comprehensive research compliance operation. The Assistant Director is responsible for working to ensure compliance with federal regulations, state statutes, and university policy, as well as establishing comprehensive training programs for each compliance area falling within URC's purview.Normal working hours are Monday - Friday, from 8:00am - 5:00pm. However, due to deadlines and other factors, hours outside the normal working schedule may be required. Travel is required, including travel for laboratory inspections, safety training and professional development.Must be eligible for employment in areas governed by the U.S. Patriot Act and the Public Health and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2022, 42 CFR 73, 7 CFR 331, and 9 CFR 121. Consequently, the individual hired for this position must successfully complete the Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security risk assessment.Due to communication expectations of the position, the incumbent will be required to maintain cellular or other electronic communication device. The negotiated salary will include an amount deemed to be sufficient to apply toward the use of a personal cell phone.There exists a potential for exposure to hazardous environments (i.e., spills and other accidents involving hazardous materials). This position is a first line responder to such accidents. Consequently, the person must be reachable by phone to respond to emergency incidents.Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds. Must be able to easily access confined laboratory spaces. Education & Experience Position Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Food/Animal Science, or related field.Five years' experience with research compliance. Prior managerial experience. Must possess a valid driver's license for travel between sites. Strong interpersonal skills. Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a diverse audience of professionals. Possess a high degree of initiative and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in an organized manner while conducting tasks accurately. Readily navigates, collaborates, and leverages resources and people from multiple areas to accomplish a shared objective.Skills to read, interpret, and author complex documents such as research protocols, regulations, desk guides, SOPs, guidelines, and policies. Must have strong self-motivation and an interest to engage in and foster collaborations with scientific investigators and research staff. Tolerates ambiguity and demonstrates leadership with limited oversight. Maintain expertise related to the rules and regulations for guidance in other compliance areas (animal care and use, human subjects research, radiation safety, conflict of interest, biosafety, select agents and research security). Ability to maintain professional standards under routine conditions of severe and non-negotiable time constraints. Problem solving ability. Ability to teach in a variety of media. Strong organizational skills and excellent time management skills. Capable of developing and implementing regulatory strategies and managing complex compliance programs. Capable of negotiating with regulatory authorities.Excellent negotiation and project management skills. Detail oriented, with a high degree of accuracy. Proficient computer skills, which include word processing (MS office applications) and database applications. Ability to develop and present educational programs to a diverse constituency.
