Position Summary:Oversees daily operations of the research laboratory. Assigns work and supervises laboratory personnel including technicians, graduate students, medical students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral research fellows, and volunteers. Assesses laboratory performance of staff and creates remediation plans when necessary. Supervises development and implementation of new protocols and troubleshoots challenges. Analyzes data using statistical software, generates graphical representations of data, and presents / reviews results with Center leadership, and contributes to the scientific preparation of manuscripts. Develops budgets for grants, submits grant applications, and grant progress reports and is proficient in web interfaces for such submissions (NIH, RRP). Fulfills the role of post award Grant Administrator. Builds and maintains strong relationships with collaborators locally, nationally, and internationally. The Laboratory Manager reports directly to the Center Director.Position Key Accountabilities:Oversees and guides laboratory staff in recommendations of changes to protocols to improve validity and accuracy.Trains laboratory staff, medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, post-doctoral research fellows, and volunteers.Makes recommendations for acquisition of new equipment and oversees validation and implementation of new equipment and protocols.Monitors, regulates, and adjusts workflows to ensure tasks are completed on time; Ensures that information is entered correctly into databases and ensures that samples are stored appropriately.Ensures that appropriate regulatory approvals are obtained for all research activities as needed (IRB and IACUC), materials transfer/data agreements properly executed.Provides statistical analysis of data using statistical software and generates graphical representations of data as requested by leadership; Assists leadership in reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, summarizing, formatting, editing, and preparing tables, graphs, for grant applications/progress reports, publications, and presentations.Oversees all stages of grant preparation, submission, and post-award including development of grant budgets in consultation with study PIs and collaborators as appropriate; Submission of grant materials through the Rush Research Portal, and works with the Office of Research Affairs and Philanthropy.Ensures that radiation and laboratory safety requirements are up to date and appropriately implemented; Responds to Safety Events and complaints in a timely manner.Oversees the financial aspects of lab operations including monitoring expenses and budgets, ordering and maintaining appropriate inventory of supplies, and providing recommendations for capital and operational budgets.Ensures the work area is maintained in a safe and uncluttered environment and maintains accountability for the preparation and maintenance of inspection readiness at all times.Coordinates with local, national, and international collaborators to ensure successful research endeavors.Works closely with leadership in developing, modifying, and monitoring the achievement of long-term goals and Center objectives, and in executing process improvement to address current and future challenges.Manages Human Resources activities of department in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.Performs other duties as assigned.Certification/Skills: Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills required Ability to multitask and meet deadlines; ability to prioritize projects and workload independently Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with individuals at all levels in the organization Ability to work effectively in a complex environment Able to work in fast pace, often stressful, computerized environment and able to perform repetitive motions Ability to work in a laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious and hazardous materials Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree In a related field required Master's Degree In a related field preferred Minimum Experience: 5 years Experience in a laboratory management or supervisory role in a healthcare setting required.
