About the Opportunity This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU].The engineering positions in the Transmission & Substation Support are responsible for providing engineering technical support for substation equipment to the 5 FE State Operating areas, as well as other groups within Transmission organization. This support covers a variety of different areas centering around substation equipment maintenance - including assisting field technicians with relay testing software issues (RTS), as well as supporting overall adherence to PRC-005 Maintenance requirements through equipment walkdowns, OpCo training, and substation maintenance inspection form reviews - as well as other large scale maintenance reviews. This position also involves assisting with the development of FEU Substation Maintenance Practices/ Methods. It is anticipated that this position will require approximately 30% - 50% field work and 50% - 70% lab / office / home office work, but is flexible based on employee skillset.Four (4) positions are being considered under this requisition. One (1) in Ohio, Two (2) in Pennsylvania, One (1) in Maryland or West Virginia, and one (1) in or near New Jersey supporting the JCPL territory.The Candidate for this position is considered mobile, with most of the week working from home or at one of FE's Substation Facilities and the possibility of working from an FE office location up to two days per week.Responsibilities include: Relay Testing System support Provide technical support for the use of the relay test software to field personnel Developing, Testing, and Issuing Relay Test Routines Provide training to field personnel on the use of the relay test software Field support and oversight of maintenance activities and documentation Assisting field personnel with testing methods and documentation for protection systems, including relays, communications equipment, trip coils, DC systems, control circuitry, sensing devices, and Sudden Pressure Relays (SPRs) Perform regular substation asset field walkdowns to verify asset inventories after construction project completion Commissioning record reviews Review and follow up on maintenance orders programmatically flagged for equipment issues or incomplete documentation. Assistance with CIP field visits for outside vendors Assist in the annual onsite CIP cyber vulnerability assessments Provide technical support to the substation groups for regulatory commitments, specifically NERC requirements PRC-005, PRC-012, CIP, and state requirements. Including: Assist field personnel with NERC PRC-005 documentation requirements Provide ad-hoc training to new personnel on NERC compliance responsibilities Assisting in the education of others on technical subject matters and in the improvement of technical programs and process effectiveness Assist in the development or modification of FirstEnergy Substation Maintenance Practices Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community based upon knowledge of potential hazards and industry regulations/requirements Supporting the emergency plan through participation in assigned storm duties including hazard responding. Ability to work both independently and in unison with others including regional and plant personnel as well as other departments/sections and outside vendors. Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system including periodic overnight stays. Qualifications include: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (BSE) from an ABET accredited institution is required. In lieu of a degree, a Professional Engineer's (PE) License is required A Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Certificate is preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of engineering experience. Proficiency/comfort working with large amounts of data preferred Strong consideration will be given to those with previous experience in the design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment. Also, familiarity with the understanding, application, and communication of microprocessor-based protection and control equipment is considered beneficial. Experience with SEL products and software, Doble (Enoserv) RTS, and other Doble testing programs is also beneficial. Commitment to FirstEnergy's Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook. Understanding of FirstEnergy's Manual of Operations, preferred. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Must be able to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen field problems and demands on time for work assignments outside of the normal duties. Demonstrate a questioning attitude to continue to learn, produce results, and strengthen existing relationships. A willingness and an aptitude for training and mentoring technicians and other members of the technical engineering staff. Developed analytical and technical abilities, with a strong mechanical aptitude. Must have strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels across the FE organization as well as with outside parties. Model active learning.
