Overview:

Thomas Jefferson University, an academic health center, was founded as Jefferson Medical College in 1824. Jefferson Medical College has awarded more than 26,000 medical degrees and has more living graduates than any other medical school in the nation. An infirmary to treat the poor was opened in 1825, and by 1844, Jefferson was providing patient beds over a shop at 10th and Sansom Streets. A 125-bed hospital, one of the first in the nation affiliated with a medical school, opened in 1877, and a school for nurses began in 1891. On July 1, 1969 the institution became Thomas Jefferson University, composed of Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the College of Graduate Studies, and the College of Allied Health Sciences. Today, this academic health center tests and treats 25,000 inpatients and more than 300,000 outpatients every year, and enrolls 2,600 future health care professionals. Public and private funding of Jefferson research exceeds $64 million annually. As the university progressed, new structures were added to the 13-acre Center City campus: the Main Hospital Building (1907), Thompson Building (1924), Medical College and Curtis Buildings (1929 and 1931), Foerderer Pavilion (1954), Jefferson Alumni Hall (1968), Scott Memorial Library (1970), Edison Building (acquired 1973), Gibbon Building (1978), Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment (1986), Medical Office Building (1986), Clinical Office Building (1990), and Bluemle Life Sciences Building (1991).

Navarro, M.D., Recognized for Impact on Thousands of Patients and Families The American Liver Foundation Delaware Valley Chapter honored Victor J. Navarro, M.D., Medical Director, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation Program, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, as Physician of the Year at its 16 th annual Honors Gala on April 29 th at the Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia Hotel. Dr. Navarro, who is also clinical associate professor of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, received the award in recognition of his outstanding commitment and dedication to the field of liver disease, the American Liver Foundation, and the impact he has had on thousands of patients and their families. “Dr. Navarro is an extraordinary physician, mentor and leader,” said Elizabeth Murphy, Executive Director, American Liver Foundation Delaware Valley Chapter. “He possesses an unswerving knowledge of liver disease, which when coupled with his keen intuition, compassionate nature and profound vision, sets him apart from his colleagues nationwide. His dedication to the field of liver disease and the work of the American Liver Foundation is outstanding, and we are extremely fortunate to benefit from his commitment and leadership. It was indeed our privilege to honor Dr. Navarro as the 2006 Physician of the Year.” The American Liver Foundation is the nation’s leading non-profit organization promoting liver health and disease prevention. The Foundation provides research, education and advocacy for those affected by liver-related diseases, including hepatitis. The Delaware Valley Chapter serves the needs of the diverse communities of Eastern/Central Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Central/Southern New Jersey. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has a long tradition of outstanding success in the treatment of patients with all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. Initiated in 1984, Jefferson’s has been the longest continuously active Liver Transplantation program in the Delaware Valley. The hospital was the first in the region to perform a liver transplant.. An experienced team of specialists provide expert diagnosis, prevention strategies, nutritional testing and advanced, innovative treatments that improve outcomes and enhance quality of life for patients with end-stage liver disease, liver trauma, malignant and benign liver tumors, cysts of the liver, and portal hypertension. With short-term transplantation patient survival results well above the national average, the group has also cultivated robust research programs, including the investigation of new anti-rejection protocols.
