Overview:
St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center are acute care facilities of Carondelet Health, which also includes three long-term care facilities and home care services. Carondelet Health is a member of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit health system. Together, St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center have offered Kansas Citians and surrounding communities more than 200 years of service. Founded in 1874 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Joseph Medical Center is the oldest private hospital in Kansas City. Founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary in 1981, St. Mary’s Medical Center opened in Blue Springs, Missouri to respond to the health care needs in eastern Jackson and western Lafayette counties. Today, Carondelet Health offers 443 licensed beds, 471 long-term care beds and a medical staff of nearly 1,000 physicians representing more than 40 medical specialties. St. Joseph Medical Center is a JCAHO, Magnet designated, 300-bed hospital offering a full array of acute care, outpatient and extended care services. The American Nurses Credentialing Center, the nation’s leading credentialing organization, has awarded St. Joseph Medical Center with Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services. Included in the medical center services are Emergency Services, the Community Center for Health and Education, the medical mall and the Carondelet Heart Institute. The Carondelet Heart Institute (CHI) is a “hospital within a hospital” at St. Joseph Medical Center, focusing on cardiovascular services including a heart rhythm center and vascular center. St. Mary’s Medical Center is a JCAHO-accredited, 143-bed hospital offering a full array of acute care, outpatient and extended care services. Included in the medical center services are Emergency Services, St. Mary’s Heart Center, birthing center, Affiliated Therapies of St. Mary’s, radiation oncology, St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Center, sleep lab, pain clinic and Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.
