American Broadband Position Purpose/SummaryThe Network Engineer will function within the Fastwyre organization to perform work requiring a high level of technical knowledge across broadband data, voice and video services for an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Requires the ability to quickly adapt and obtain a high level of knowledge of other areas within the engineering field for all critical infrastructure platforms. When acting as project leader, this position takes the lead in managing large-scale, complex, and highly analytical tasks. The Network Engineer serves as lead technical architect and integrator for large, complex network infrastructures and mentor’s junior personnel in the engineering field.Primary Duties & ResponsibilitiesProvides long-range strategic planning for new and innovative networking technologies, including research and development of alternative architectures, new infrastructure framework, and engineering strategy; monitors the impact of technological developments and supplier roadmaps.Leads advanced technical project teams and contractors, with engineering emphasis on routing/switching, system buildouts, and systems security and reliability; plans, assigns, directs, and coordinates work efforts; develops project plans, timetables, and staff requirements.Enhances legacy infrastructure with upgrade designs, expansion projects and configuration improvements, presents proposals to Director level and above for costing approval and IRR/breakeven targets.Oversees the performance of day-to-day networking tasks to ensure network reliability, availability, performance and serviceability with minimal service interruptions.Provides complex technical support, analyzes, and solves complex reported network problems.Develops criteria and oversees design and development of prototypical lab environments for the purpose of providing testing and training platforms of new networking technologies by engineering and operations staff.Develops and produces engineering documentation for installation, optimization and evolving network topology. Acts as highest level of technical support internally for troubleshooting of communications hardware or software.Develop and implement standard operating procedures and author system configuration documents for on-going reference.Represents the engineering department at group, task force and steering committee meetings and pilot testing, as assigned.Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned, occasional travel to Fastwyre locations as required.Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills for SuccessExpert level knowledge of transport protocols, routing protocols, and security/auth to encryption protocols at all layers of the OSI model with emphasis on TCP/IP are essential.Must have knowledge networking features and protocols such as spanning tree, ARP, CDP, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VTP, EtherChannel, 802.1Q trunking, MLS, HSRP, GLBP, VSS/VSL, QoS, TCP/IP, UDP, IPSEC, HTTP, HTTPS, Multicast, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, IPsec, RADIUS/TACACS+, SNMP, current WAN/MAN telecommunications technologies and Web caching services (proxy server) and 802.1x.Expert level of IP Subnetting, DNS, encryption technologies and standards, VPNs, VLANs, VoIP and other network routing methods.Extensive experience with routers, switches, network security, Internet/Intranet environments with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).Understanding of SDN/SDDC (Software Defined Network or Datacenter - full stack - (compute, storage, network) including experience with AWS, Azure, Openstack, Cloudstack, or related virtualization technologies. Experience with Calix, Cisco, Ciena are required.Knowledge of technology industry trends and emerging technologies.Knowledge of project life cycle methodologies.Ability to manage studies, special projects, and assignments with long-range impacts.Hands-on experience with how to support repeatable, reliable, and scalable network architectures with fault tolerance, performance tuning, monitoring systems, statistics/metrics collection, and disaster recovery.Expertise in analyzing network traffic capacity and performance characteristics.QualificationsAt a minimum, the Network Engineer must have:Requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications, or a related field, or five to seven years of direct network experience with a high emphasis on complex network design and support.Current engineering certification of CCNP Service Provider or JNCIA Service Provider preferred.
