ABOUT THE ROLE: The Materials and Process Development Engineer will play a critical role in the development of new materials and print process parameters for polymer materials on 3D Systems selective laser sintering (SLS) printers. The print process development team is part of the materials development group and plays a critical role in the integration of various system components, including hardware, software, and materials. This position is located at 3D Systems headquarters in Rock Hill, SC. WHAT YOU'LL DO: Conduct daily research and development with SLS printers and materials; this is a primarily in-lab position and regular remote work is not available. Hands on operation of all aspects of the print process, including setup, printing, and post-processing of parts. Work closely with both hardware and software teams to develop the print process for all current and future SLS materials and systems. -This includes identifying and helping to resolve issues with hardware, software, and firmware to deliver an extraordinary product to our customers. Research and understand material properties and collaborate with new and existing suppliers to meet business roadmap objectives. Identify main process parameters (inputs) and systemically study how they affect printer outputs (both quantitative and qualitative). Conduct formal DOE studies and statistical data analysis using tools such as JMP, Minitab, QuantumXL, etc. S ummarize data and create reports for both technical teams and senior/executive management. Work safely and efficiently in a lab setting with minimal supervision WHAT YOU'LL NEED: A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a technical field such as Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering is required. Related disciplines will also be considered with relevant experience. 1-2 years' experience working with selective laser sintering or other additive manufacturing processes is preferred. ABOUT THE ROLE: As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will utilize your extensive experience and SolidWorks expertise to design, develop, and optimize mechanical systems and components. Your role will be crucial in driving engineering projects from concept to production, ensuring that all solutions meet technical, budgetary, and scheduling requirements. Assignments are outlined in terms of broad specifications, objectives, anticipated results and critical reference points requiring special attention to detail. Location: San Diego, CA or Rock Hill, SC WHAT YOU'LL DO: Responsible for the design, development, documentation and test of complex, high-accuracy, mechatronic systems. Responsible for requirements analysis and allocation, design synthesis, trade studies and selection of optimal design solutions across the functional, performance, cost and schedule domains. Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate design data including: solid models; drawings; procurement and fabrication specifications; quality assurance requirements and inspection specifications. WHAT YOU'LL NEED:Qualifications >15 years relevant complex systems design and CAD experience. BS in Mechanical Engineering or related plus >10 years relevant experience required. May substitute equivalent experience in the field. MS in Mechanical Engineering or related plus >8 years relevant experience required. May substitute equivalent experience in the field. 2-3 years' experience with 3D metal printing and additive manufacturing preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:Technical Design, implementation and test of complex mechatronic systems and subsystems in accordance with functional and performance requirements and specifications including: development of design solutions (synthesis); selection of optimal design solutions by means of trade-off and sensitivity studies; and, verification of design solutions by means of supporting engineering analyses, modeling and simulation and/or design verification testing. Demonstrated expert level proficiency in modern computer aided design (CAD) tools, specifically, Solidworks and Solidworks PDM; integration of large, complex systems; interface specification and management; product breakdown structure (PBS) and bill-of-materials (BOMs); tolerance stack-up analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T); development of procurement specifications, fabrication drawings, quality assurance (QA) requirements; and, cost, schedule and risk estimation. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of finite element methods and tools for the analysis of structural and thermal performance. Demonstrated expertise developing design solutions employing structured systems engineering best practices and/or processes in accordance with relevant standards including ANSI-EIA-632, IEEE Std 1220; ISO/IEC 15288; NASA Systems Engineering Handbook or similar. Test & Evaluation Design and development of mechatronic test systems for the verification and validation of system functionality and performance characterization including: test requirements analysis and allocation; safety requirements; test plan and procedures development; test stand design; test integration and checkout, test execution; and, reporting. Execution of complex system and subsystem level testing in accordance with authorized test plans and procedures.
