Understands and abides by established US Coast Guard rules and policies for operating equipment on US navigable waters. This is a union position.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Navigates vessel and ensures safe operation of vessel as to not cause injury or damages. Use specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, water depths, currents, and avoiding other marine traffic, outlying shoals, and other hazards to operate boat/barge. Load and transport assorted pieces of equipment, supplies, and materials. Steers tow boat towing Performs fire drills Responsible for safety of all crew and conduct safety meetings. Properly and safely fender, moor, and/or anchor boat/barge. Consult maps, charts, weather reports, and navigation equipment to determine and direct work boats/barge movements. Give direction to crew members. Maintain any required logs. Outfit and maintain proper safety equipment. Inspects towing vessel. Direct maintenance on the vessel as needed. Responds to any situation that would require emergency rescue of persons. Coordinate crew changes and fueling procedures. Perform any other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
