SUMMARY: The person in this position inspects, services, and maintains diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations, diagnoses diesel-engine malfunctions, and makes indicated repairs using hand tools, measuring instruments, and sometimes machine tools. He or she may operate mechanical equipment to assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts and may be required to qualify as a shop-service locomotive engineer in accordance with FRA standards.  Other skills include the ability to weld and fabricate metal using a torch and electric welding machines, ability to climb and lift heavy material and work at high levels. Have knowledge of and be able to operate machines such as a drill press, lathe, and electric welding machines. Must be able to read electrical blueprints and drawings. May be required to maintain records of repairs and inspections of locomotives and other related machinery. Will be crossed trained as Electrician.
