Specifically, the group is conducting collaborative research on the association between anionic guests and cavitand hosts in aqueous solution as well as on the adsorption of organic acids on functionalized silica surfaces. Our research on host-guest association has impacts on the understanding of ionic specific interactions in aqueous solution that plays a significant role not just in supramolecular assembly, but in biological processes regulated by distinct ions and in understanding the molecular underpinnings of the Hoffmeister effect. Our research on carboxylic acid solutions, on the other hand, is relevant to the purification of the products of biofuel production via low energy surface adsorption processes.Qualifications:Candidates for this position are expected to hold a doctoral degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or closely related field with expertise in conducting molecular simulations in a high-performance computing environment. Appointments are for one year, with the possibility of renewal depending upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. The position will be centered on modeling climate-plant-water interactions in salt-affected ecosystems, with a specific focus on coastal wetlands and their vulnerability to sea-level rise and salinization. The work will require developing simplified models of the plant hydraulics under osmotic stress and designing their upscaling to larger (plot up to ecosystem) scales for hydrologic and climate modeling applications. Joint appointments between the School of Science and Engineering and other schools will be considered. The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), founded in 1977, has a an ABET accredited undergraduate program with approximately 150 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. BME is headquartered in the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) on Tulane's picturesque uptown campus, with office, laboratory, and engineering facilities located on that campus. Under construction, the Steven and Jann Paul Hall will provide advanced laboratory and instructional space. The BME department also leads Tulane's Institute of Integrated Engineering for Health and Medicine (TI2EHM) on the downtown Health Sciences Campus. TI2EHM is dedicated to interdisciplinary research and technology development, and provides BME faculty with exceptional laboratory and office space in close proximity with colleagues in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and the New Orleans Bioinnovation Center (NOBIC). Finally, BME administers an interdisciplinary Bioinnovation PhD program that is supported by an NIH T32 training grant.
