Primary responsibilities of the position include: 1) building and expanding an independent research program and advancing the research and academic programs of the division; 2) collaborating with other investigators on the design, implementation and interpretation of diverse biomedical research projects involving infectious diseases and diseases associated with immune responses to pathogens, and to use this knowledge to develop tailored preventive and therapeutic strategies; and 3) training of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and residents. The relative emphasis on each of these components is negotiable depending on the applicant's interest and expertise. The individual selected will join a very active research group that includes several NIH-funded faculty members and numerous collaborators, both domestic and international. The Division of Microbiology is actively engaged in several areas of non-human primate research including AIDS, tuberculosis, varicella zoster virus, neurodegenerative diseases, biodefense, immunology of aging and regenerative medicine, SARS-CoV-2 and emerging pathogens. The academic appointment will be in either the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Tulane University School of Medicine (SOM) or the Department of Tropical Medicine of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM).
