Review of Idaho job market
A main source of new Idaho jobs is the influx of gun manufacturers from states like Colorado that have placed new restrictions on gun ownership. Idaho governor Otter has invited eighty gun manufacturers to come to the state. There are already about 180 gun manufacturers and ammunition makers in the state. PNM Arms has relocated to Idaho from Seattle. Idaho is also luring “recreation technology” companies who make everything from rifle scopes to kayaks to create jobs. Tourism in Idaho account for 5% of the total employment. Most tourism jobs are based in the Bitterroot National Forest and other recreation areas.
The major sources of state of Idaho jobs are in the government. School districts, the state government and the Department of Corrections are good ways to start searching for work throughout Idaho. Health service providers like St. Luke’s Health Systems, Blue Cross and regional hospitals each employ hundreds. Because the federal government has locked up most of the state in national parks and wilderness areas, the U.S. Forrest Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Department of Defense are another ways to find job opportunities.
Agriculture is a major source of Idaho current vacancies. Amalgamated Sugar and a host of food coops employ thousands. Marsing Agricultural Labor Sponsoring Committee is a temporary agency for farm workers and the largest employer in Owyhee County, Idaho.
