Benefits:

Happily ever after Their lives together may not be unique, but three couples, now living in the Sunrise Senior Living community in Burlington, have been married for a combined 165 years, proving love can indeed be everlasting. William and Olive Lagergren, both 84, were married Sept. 10, 1949 in Watertown. They met in church and dated for six months before tying the knot. According to William, the pair lived in Winchester for 40 years. He was a printer with University Press and Olive worked for more than two decades for Utica Mutual Insurance as a secretary. What kept them together through the years? According to Olive, the reason is simple: “We fell in love and we’re still in love.” “We’ve had some good years together,” she said. Asked if there was a secret to their marriage lasting so long, both said the difference was their generation. “When you did it, you did it,” said Olive. “We had a good life together and did a lot of traveling,” said William. “We’ve been around the country.” Olive offered a bit of advice to couples starting their lives together. “Enjoy each other’s company and be thankful you have each other,” she said. “We’ve been lucky. We’ve had all good years.” School sweethearts Jim and Agnes Murphy will celebrate their 60th anniversary this year. Married June 7, 1950, the couple met while attending Immaculate Conception School in Revere. “We had a candy break and I used to go by that door every day,” said Jim. “Agnes is a chocoholic and I used to slip her a bar of candy. Next thing you know she’s coming to watch football practice. One day she gave me a ride home on her bicycle. I rode on the handle bars.” Jim entered the Navy less than a month after Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and served for five years. During that time, Agnes stayed at home, working as a dental assistant and office manager. Jim’s theory for the couple’s long marriage was not complicated. “Agnes liked the things I liked,” he said. “Happiness, travel and compatibility are the secrets to a long marriage.” Travel played a big part of their lives, visiting Hawaii, Aruba and Bermuda, among other places with friends and in-laws. Agnes retired four times before finally calling it quits for good in 1974. Jim sold cars for Bennington Motors before opening his own insurance business. He offered this advice to young couple considering marriage: “Do it. Two can live as cheaply as one,” he said. Asked what her happiest moment was with her husband, Agnes was unabashed in her reply. “All of them were,” she said. “I don’t have one or two.” “I would do it all over again,” said Jim. Love, Italian style Ernie Pierni, 91, and his wife, Ann, 79, dated for eight months before walking down the aisle on Oct. 24, 1965. This year the couple will mark their 45th anniversary. At the time, Ernie worked at his family’s supermarket in Lynn, where Ann often shopped for groceries. “I invited her to a Christmas party and after about eight months, we were married,” said Ernie. Ann said they owed their marriage’s longevity to a number of reasons, including coming from large families. “I’m one of 11 [kids] and he’s one of seven,” she said. “We never had an argument,” Ernie said. “That’s the reason we’re still together.” She added that it didn’t hurt that her mother liked Ernie. “She [Ann’s mother] said I had a nice face,” he said with a laugh. For couples today, Ann offers this simple advice: “Get along.” “We used to go out for dinner,” Ernie said. “It’s like dating once a week,” said Ann. According to Ernie, one of the best times the young couple had was their honeymoon to Italy. “We stayed six weeks,” said Ernie, adding he’d never taken a vacation from the family business. As with the other couples, travel was a big part of the Pierni’s lives, visiting numerous states and Italy. Ernie emphasized he never traveled without Ann by his side. They too, offered words of wisdom to newlyweds. “Listen to one another and don’t have a viewpoint that’s not flexible,” said Ernie. “Never have an argument. After it’s over, what have you accomplished?” (From Burlington Union, February 10)

Career Opportunities:

Little visitors leave big impression The Orange County Miniatures are trotting all over Yorba Linda's hearts. The small horses have been parading in their decorated carts from Laguna Beach to Hollywood, and they are hoping to be marching in Pasadena in the future. Miniature horses Dorado, Annie, Silver and Rockie recently trotted right into the Brighton Gardens of Yorba Linda. The small horses brought along their handlers and carts, and the residents of the senior living community were amazed that there were four horses inside their home. The horses were greeted in the great room, and then they trotted off to the assisted living quarters to greet residents in their rooms. Sunrise believes in providing an environment much like home, and has included on the payroll a pooch named Arthur. The seniors are also allowed to have their own personal pets if they are able to care for them. Brighton Gardens also houses a striking aviary of finches in the main lobby. The seniors at Brighton had many horse stories to share. They all remember riding the old farm and ranch horses with just a lead line, or when a testy pony dumped them in the field and ran all the way home. One resident's family started in the horse racing industry in the early 1900s, and they raised quarter horses for the track. All were amazed at the little horses' personalities, and the horses were offered Christmas cookies and peppermints. The horses are fun to visit with, but they need their space outside. There is controversy over whether miniature horses are suitable as assistance animals for seniors, the blind or people with disabilities. Opponents of using miniatures for assistance animals raise concerns that horses are prey animals, with a flight instinct that may limit their usefulness. Mostly friendly, and predictable, there is always the moment when the horses could bolt. In terms of practical considerations, it has been noted that it is difficult for miniature horses to do things such as lie down in the seat of a taxicab, or check into a hotel room for any extended stay. In the U.S., the minis are legally classified as livestock and require outdoor stabling for good health. Their use is limited to owners with access to a large yard in communities having tolerant land use regulations. Within the last 15 years, the miniature horse has become a popular back yard horse in Yorba Linda. The Orange County Miniatures drive the trails, and are often seen along the El Cajon trail and at the Community Center, City Hall and at Hurless Barton Park. The horses left many smiles behind, as well as little hoof prints all over the senior's hearts! The ladies had great joy in sharing their passion of the smallest horses of Yorba Linda.
