General SummaryThe research scientist in the Section of Clinical Sciences in the Division of Rheumatology, Inflammation, and Immunity will join Team Sparks and serve as the Director of Data Analytics for the team led by Dr. Jeffrey Sparks. The research scientist will oversee application of data management and statistical analyses, train others, work with internal and external researchers on their projects and contribute to products, e.g., manuscripts, resulting from these projects, as well as support analyses for internal lab projects. The current projects on Team Sparks relate to rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility and outcomes, rheumatic diseases and infection risk and outcomes, and rheumatic complications of immunotherapy for cancer. A variety of data sources are used including secondary analyses of research data, administrative data including electronic health records and pharmacy claims databases, and primary research through observational studies or trials. Medical Laboratory Scientist I, Pathology

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:The Center for Advanced Molecular Diagnostics (CAMD) consists of two CLIA-certified clinical laboratories, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics for the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and a Partners Research Core, the CAMD Translational Biomarker Core (TBC). Our mission is to provide high quality innovative genetic diagnostic services to support the patient care and clinical research missions of our institutions. The Medical Laboratory Scientist I, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision and working quite independently, this person carries out all policies and performs all clinically validated tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures (SOPs). In addition, this person performs a variety of sophisticated molecular protocols that are in development for diagnostic testing and will contribute to the development of new SOPs. This person works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and accurately interpret test results. Protocols utilize a variety of molecular assays that are constantly evolving as the discipline develops, but includes PCR, RT-PCR, capillary gel electrophoresis, and Next Generation Sequencing.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA (as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495.)The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results.(a) Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.(b) Each individual performing high complexity testing must- (1) Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results; (2) Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; (3) Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed; (4) Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance; (5) Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director; (6) Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; and (7) Except as specified in paragraph (c) of this section, if qualified under § 493.1489(b)(5), perform high complexity testing only under the onsite, direct supervision of a general supervisor qualified under § 493.1461.Additional Responsibilities in collaboration with TBC Clinical Supervisor, Senior Research Scientist, and Medical Director:1. Responsible for following the clinical laboratories' procedures for specimen handling, specimen processing, test analyses, and reporting of patient results, including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing material.3. Participates in sample intake and accessioning processes which includes: a. Receiving samples, verifying, and gathering patient and test information as neededb. Evaluating requisition information and entering cases into the Anatomic Pathology laboratory information system (LIS), PowerPath, and the laboratory management system, Clarity.c. Performs routine and high complexity laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids, according to laboratory policies.2. Prepares samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies.3. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of all test results according to laboratory policies.4. Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents.5. Keeps accurate records of quality control, maintenance and workload data according to laboratory policies.6. Responsible to document all corrective action procedures undertaken in the clinical laboratory. 7. Refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties and documents all corrective action procedures undertaken in the clinical laboratory.8. Performs clerical and support services as needed, such as answering the telephone, calling Super Stat, Code sample results, and /or alert values to the appropriate department or Licensed Care Provider, disposing of contaminated specimens, control of inventory, monitoring pending logs, and other assigned duties.9. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing material.10. Communicates with hospital personnel providing assistance related to laboratory policies and procedures, laboratory utilization, and test result interpretation.11. Additional responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.12. Keeps current in developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in clinical laboratory. Participates in internal and external continuing education.13. Promotes the mission and vision of Brigham and Women's Hospital and laboratories, and a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performance among the laboratory staff.14. Adheres to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures and plans including infection control and safety plans.15. Performs any other duties as required, which may include but not limited to general laboratory duties such as processing specimens, logging in specimens, putting supplies away, washing pipettes, discarding laboratory samples, racking samples, etc.Qualifications Qualifications:Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university. .ASCP certified required Two years of experience as a Medical Technologist within ImmunologyEEO Statement BWH is an Affirmative Action Employer.
